Its Just that time of the year and we have been busy with baseball, School, garden, chickens, and Senior's job. And when we do have a bit of free time (which is usually in the evenings) we retire to the front porch. Heck! we have hardly had the TV on at night during the past few weeks.
We did however manage a trip down to FLA to visit the parents, and then made an abrupt right turn off 95 and took the boys over to "Patriots Point" in Charleston. If you ever get a chance to go, I highly recommend it , there they have the USS YORKTOWN, SSN CLAGAMORE, and USS LAFFEY. Just make sure you wear a comfortable pair of shoes, because you are up and down all these WWll ships.
Our boys were so excited, they both like to do models, and were thrilled to see some of the planes they have completed on a much larger scale:
USS YORKTOWN:
SSN: CLAGAMORE:
USS LAFFEY:
The YORKTOWN is also a museum boasting artwork from that era:
I have seen this picture of this convoy before at NAS Pensacola and have always admired it. Just looks so darn awesome:
I've been on the battleship in Mobile Bay, and on the North Carolina in Wilmington. I know I've bragged about it before but I spent time on the U.S.S. New Jersey (just staff meetings) and saw it fire on the bad guys in the Shouf Mountains during the Lebanon intervention of 1982-1983. So I got to see something no one will ever see again, a battleship in action.
ReplyDeleteGlad all is well down there. It does get busy in the summer with a family.
I too have been on the one in Mobile, the North Carolina and even the USS San Jacinto in Texas. But nothing would beat actually being in board one when it fires..now that's cool. We are planning a trip soon to Wilmington, its been years since Senior and I were on the NC and the boys want to go.
DeleteJUGM,
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker when it comes to any military museum, or sights to see. We've walked ships, subs, and had a blast. I would have to agree on wearing comfy shoes because there's a lot of walking to be done when it comes to ships!!!! The next place I want to go, and take hubby is the US Air Force Museum in Ohio. One day soon, we will be able to visit this place. I look forward to reading about your trip to Wilmington in the near future.
Give the guys a big hug from us. Sending love your way.
Your Friend,
Sandy
me too.... the museum at NAS P-Cola is also amazing, and I wished we had taken the boys, they would have loved it. There is also a Air Force museum along 95 in Georgia, we also pass it, but its not as good, just a couple of planes. And yes, once we hit Wilmington I will do a post.
DeletePlease stay dry out there...my cousin in TX posted a video to her facebook of the medina river nearly dry a couple of weeks ago...and then it showed it almost flowing over its banks... crazy! We are bone dry here..you water the garden and it just puddles on top, you can kick the soil and the water has not penetrated it. we could really use some of that rain.
P.S........I think we will need one of those ships to get out of Oklahoma if the rain keeps coming down. We have 10 more days of rain!!!
ReplyDeletepoor sandy! I hate it for your garden..
DeleteGlad to hear things are going well! :-)
