With the fact that spring has sprung, I have been trying to work on the chicken hatching thing.. I pick up a broody hen, throw her in for some loving with the rooster, then a couple of days later put her in the maternity ward, so she can lay her eggs, and nothing... The entire science of it all baffles me that I am not considering either buying chicks, or getting the eggs once they lay them and incubating them. .. Will keep you all posted.. : )
Planting season has also begun, Senior has been non stop getting the garden plowed and the rows neat and spaced decently. I picked up a pound of Silver king corn seed last week, and over the weekend we got it in the ground..

We wore out the hired help, and much to their happiness we are finally investing in a seeder plow...
But, 15 rows later...so pretty!!! I still have a quarter of the bag left, and I suppose Senior will do some more rows this weekend..
I have the best niece ever, she does metal stamping and charms and made me this necklace for the boys baseball. I love it!!!
We just celebrated Easter, and for you all I hope it was truly blessed. It was our first year coloring fresh eggs straight from the chickens, and I got to tell you the natural colors from the hens, made for some vibrant colors.... They also made for some great deviled eggs, that were so good the boys cleaned them out....

That will be some good corn! And the eggs look good too! We had 18 deviled eggs, they lasted about 10 minutes!
ReplyDeletemy kids love deviled eggs so much that they lick the bowl of all the "egg paste" as they call it..
Deleteawesome!! i love that the boys helped plant! ;)
ReplyDeletethanks! They actually do like getting in the garden and helping.
DeleteSome fine looking plow lines there!!!
ReplyDeletethank you !
DeleteJUGM,
ReplyDeleteYUM....Corn!!!! I love free help, I took advantage of it too. Son turned garden beds for me with a shovel.
Way to go boys!!!!
Are you growing an entire corn crop this season? Your chickens love corn too right?
Love the homemade necklace your Niece made, how sweet :-)
Sending hugs and love to y'all.
Sandy
no not doing all corn. on the other side is our onions, much to my dislike, Senior is putting in a bit of okra, and he wants some red peppers too. I also got some seedless watermelon seeds this year, and gonna add some other stuff like our beans, zucchini, etc.... Yes chickens love the corn, its fun watching them go nuts with a cob in their coop
DeleteGreat start to the garden! The hired help will feel much better when they're eating that sweet corn! And what a cute necklace!
ReplyDeleteOnce a hen goes broody, there will be no eggs. And hens will be fertile for a few weeks after being with a roo, granted they submitted to the roo. So just gather eggs and put under that broody hen.
Yes, the kids like planting, and then picking and eating it when the time comes, we still have corn from last summer in the freezer...about to thaw it and throw it to the chickens..
Deletethanks for the advice.. I took out my austrolop yesterday after she spent a few days at "club roo" and have her in the maternity ward, I also added in some non fertile eggs, to give her an incentive to lay on the nest..hopefully it works.
Gurlie - you and Senior sure do know how to put those kids to work - bahahahah! but think of all the corn you'll get this year. we have nothing in the ground here - still too early! but we'll be starting some greens and things in the greenhouse this week.
ReplyDeletethat necklace is beautiful! she is very talented!
imagine colouring eggs that you "grew" yourself - that's awesome! i love devilled eggs too and i thought it was a regional thing here because back in the city people called devilled eggs "egg salad".
sending much love to you, Senior and your little workforce! your friend,
kymber
Hey Gurlie.... Ick egg salad I'm not a fan... Lol. Deviled eggs are a whole other story and they are a very big southern thing here.
DeleteYea got garden started but I am a bit nervous now we got some cold weather moving in next week.
Much love to you and Jam...
