The Pill Pushers

While I write this post, please understand that I speak from experience, with Senior, and my father in law. Are or where under the care of Veterans Administration doctors. Senior was once stationed with another chief, who's wife was in an accident, she was prescribed hydrochodone, went back for more, then she soon learned it had street value and began to traffic it. She was so far gone and over the edge, she was facing jail time for the trafficking  to avoid that fate she chose to take her own life.

The rise in over medicating the nations veterans has surged nearly 270 % in the last 12 years.  Whenever you go to the VA for a medical problem, you get all kinds of thing prescribed to you. You walk through the door, tell the doc your problem, get examined, and "poof" you get a prescription of narcotics, with refills. Then begins the abuse. Then you go through your prescription , go back again, and "poof" another refill. Before the patient knows it, they are addicted.
Then it is realized that the first prescription is no longer affective, or the pain has worsened and "poof" you get something else stronger prescribed...Before you know it, you are on as much as 8 different pain killers all at the same time.  Going to the VA is like being a kid in a candy store.

You are depressed,  suicidal, you hallucinate, you can't sleep at night, but once you do fall asleep you will sleep until the late afternoon. Even worse is you are more confrontational and abusive towards family and friends.

Another fellow veteran friend of ours, was recently hospitalized. His wife demanded he go to a civilian hospital, it was learned that the VA had over prescribed his blood pressure medication and he nearly died.
The same was also the story for my father in law, after he did pass from heart failure, we learned just how much medication the VA had prescribed, and was still sending to his home.

All have the highest rate of narcotic/prescription drug abuse.

 If you know a Veteran who you believe is being over prescribed pain killers, and are possibly addicted to them then please talk to them. Encourage them to get help, Before they hurt themselves, or some innocent person.....

Day 3

It is Day 3 of the "Shutdown"...  the only issue with me on that subject, is that they closed the military commissaries.

Senior and I might be making a road  trip out to the country butcher soon and filling up our freezer.

The other issue is Mitch McConnell asked for a Veterans Package to be put to a vote, and Harry Reid is "NO"  Okay Harry, who was it that fought and died to help  secure the freedoms of this country so that you can even become a Senator?  Oh that;s right..  Veterans and Active Duty.

All this because Washington claims we have no money. But ,we are still sending money around the world : 

500,000.000 in aid to the Palestinians
1.3 billion in tanks and F-16's to Egypt
Millions to Syrian Rebels

laying off 800,000 federal employees because we are broke...is PRICELESS

The local welfare recipients in my area are about to scream their heads off. One good thing about the shutdown is they have stopped the "head start" programs. It is like a freebie from the government that kids in low income areas can take advantage of after school.. Basically it s a glorified baby sitter funded by tax payers. Their fee lunch program has also been cut. That means Baby Mama actually has to get up, and fix her 8 kids by different daddies lunch. -- Funny!

Happy V-J Day

 

 

It was also the day that a young sailor named George Mendonsa grabbed Greta Zimmer-Friedman and planted this smooch on her.  Alfred Eisenstaedt snapped the iconic photo and it was published in Life Magazine.

Mendonsa was stationed on the "Sullivans" and had just returned from the war in the Pacific. He was happy he made it through and over joyed to be home. The nurses gave our troops such great care and love that he grabbed the first one he saw. He held her back, and gave her the kiss of a life time- 68 years ago today!   Over all these years they stayed in touch and have attended reunions together.

 

 Personally, I always loved this picture, I have always tried to imagine what that scene must have been like. Every one so happy, everyone so patriotic and proud to be an American..and every one with overwhelming pride and gratitude for our military.....

Memorial Day...

I ask this of my readers, on this Memorial Day To Whom Do You Honor?

Memorializing our nations hero's began during the Civil War when Southern ladies, put flowers and items of remembrance on both Confederate and Union Soldiers graves.
It was in 1868 that Commander in Chief, John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic issued General Order 11. He declared it to be for the purpose of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers who died defending their country during the Civil War.  That first Memorial Day Ceremony or "Decoration Day" as it was known then.Took place at Arlington National Ceremony with the placing of the wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier. Graves throughout the cemetery were also decorated with small American Flags.
But some argue that the first memorial day actually took place with those good southern ladies a few years prior.

For many Americans the day involves parades and cookouts, It has also become known as the unofficial start of summer. The Indianapolis 500 has been traditionally ran on this weekend since 1911, and NASCAR jumped on board in 1961 with the running of the Coca-Cola 600 the same day.

But Again, I ask the question: "Whom do you honor on Memorial Day"?  For me its people like my Great Great Uncle who died in Germany during WW1. I also think of ancestors who perished during the Civil War, and all those who died in wars since. I think of Seal Team 6 on Memorial Day, who's helo went down and all on board perished. And I think of Hero's like "The Sullivan Brothers" who in WW11 were stationed together on board the USS JUNEAU..they died together when it was struck by a torpedo.  I think of all those Military members who perished in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and battles across the Pacific and Europe.
All these Americans were hero's. If not for them and thousands others...we wouldn't have the freedoms we do know. We owe them our lives. We owe them our respect and gratitude.
They Sacrificed so much so we could stay free... 

A "Stark" Reminder....

I remember this day well. I was 17 and a Junior in high school. The naval community in which I grew up in was rocked, the entire city was rocked, our Nation as a whole..was rocked.
 For days and days on our local news stations it was all they showed. The faces of those lost, the families, and the tears.. How could this have happened? Was the question every one asked. I remember then President Ronald Reagan coming to town, he spoke to the families, and offered his love and support. Then he spoke at the televised memorial.
I did a post on the Stark about a year and a half ago. Today on the anniversary, I felt it was time for another one. Its so easy to forget, and most school age kids now don't even know it occured.

A year after the incident I met one of the wives, she was the most visible through out it all, and for quite a number of years afterwards. Her name is Barabara Kiser, her husband was EMCS Stephen Kiser.
She had been fortunate to follow the ship through the mideast, she and their five year old son were awaiting its arrival in Bahrain.
She was one of the first family members allowed on board to tour the damage. She found the Chiefs berthing area, and her husbands rack. While sifting through the ashes, she found a small bible she had given him in 1980.
The heat and intensity from the two missiles plus 600 pounds of fuel, the fire reached a temperature of 12 million BTUs.  To date, that is the hottest fire ever recorded on board a US Naval Ship. Everything in that section was instantly incinerated...
But amazingly, EMCS Kisers, small bible survived. His bible has traveled throughout the Mideast on Mrs. Kisers mission trips, she has retold its story many times...  it serves as a reminder of her husband, and of the 36 other sailors lost that day, 26 years ago.

The day I met her, I was on church visitation and we happend upon her home. She instantly brought the bible out..and I feel fortuante that I was one of those people to get to see it. The story of her husbands bible is one that I have never forgot..and most likely never will.

In 2011, after the fall of Saddam Hussien the Goverments of Iraq and the United States, reached an agreement to compensate families of the first gulf war and of the USS STARK. a 400 million dollar fund was set up. However, OUR goverment is still 2 years later after the compensation still trying to set up a mechanism in which applicants should get paid.

Memories

This is a scene that will forever be in my memories of being a Navy Wife. How many countless mornings, did I drop Senior off before he got underway, or how many times did I pass this on a daily basis going to and from work.
 I loved being apart of the active duty community, I loved feeling the sense of family with the ships we were on and our divisions. We were all so close knit. Parties at this one or that ones house on the weekends, week night softball games....yea, those were the days all right.

I was so proud to be able to see something every day that most people never got to see. Those majestic ships, the guys standing in formation for morning muster, and then standing at attention for the raising of "The Colors". Going on board like it was a second home, Taking Senior dinner and hanging out on his duty days. Once, He had the mid watch on the Quarter Deck, and I drove out to sit outside with him in the wee hours of the morning.

It makes me sad to think of the way our government is depleting our forces, and the readiness of our military. We were once a mighty fighting force, now we can hardly afford to pay our troops. And the moral is rumored to be at an all time low. The kids in now will never know the Navy that I knew. Today it is all high tech, with email and chats... A Navy wife's biggest fear is the email being down...
She will never know what it is like to get numbered letters a stack at a time. She will never know what is like to get a surprise phone call saying the ship pulled in. Now with video chats, she will never know what its like to go six months without seeing your sailor. Once that ship untied, and got underway..that was it, until the end of deployment.

Yea, all those days are long gone..seeing that picture brought it all back to me..memories forever etched in time.

Veteran Charity Scam...

Allied Veterans Charity Scam

Have you heard about this? It happened here locally. Money that was generated and supposed to be donated to veterans, was stolen from them and went in to the pockets of lawyers, politicians, and union bosses.  Senior being the Senior Chief and Veteran he his, left a nice comment on one such union bosses facebook page... You can imagine its content. 

Our little town has one of their cafes, and I was excited when I first saw the signs that it was a place for veteran affairs. I had even thought once or twice about volunteering with the organization... good thing I didn't.
Our Lt. Governor has since resigned over the matter, she was once a consultant for the organization. She worked on the marketing for Allied Veterans and as a former naval officer and veteran she  had even been in a couple of commercials for them. It  shows me that this is a far reaching investigation and lots of people are going down for what they have done and for the money that was illegal taken from the brave men and women that sacrificed so much for their country.

When I hear things like this, it sickens me. Our veterans and active duty are all ready getting a royal screw job by this government, now you add this in to the mix...just infuriates me.

Microchips

Does this scare you? because it should. I knew this was coming. a few years back when I worked on base, I heard it rumored. The idea was to store service and health records on the chips and install it in the wrist of the service member.  One girl I worked with was all for the idea, she and I argued constantly over it. She said it would end tons of paperwork and red tape. All a doctor would have to do is scan a persons wrist and their entire medical history would be displayed. She thought that was "Awesome". 
I think that bad things start off with the best of intentions....

Now, it seems this idea is coming to  fruition, after all we have been doing our animals for years. If this is accepted by the military, then the thinking is the general public will as well.

Isn't this the goal though?

Painful Cuts Starting...

 

If you have been following my for any length of time, then you know that last year when the issue of thte ERB came out, I was all over it. It is bad when the Fleet 4 Star is on the cover of Navy Times talking about it.

Do you notice the bottom line?

The ERB has not only caused pain and suffering, but it has caused suicides and divorces. From what I am also understanding, if you got ERB'd and received severance, before you start getting any sort of disability, you first have to pay back the severance..

If you were some one that was cut, let this serve as a reminder that no one is safe, not the little E-1 or all the way up to Admiral. They dont care about all your awards and accolades, they don't care what merits and medals you have received. You are open game and your neck is on the chopping block.

 It makes these guys feel like their years of service and sacrifice has meant nothing.

 

Our military is getting slapped in the face, because this administration cares more about the welfare state, and entitlements then it does national defense. It wants to deplete this Nation of its great military might, and open us up to forward more of his agenda.

 

I am so thankful that Senior got out when he did. I really feel for these guys and their families. The part about longer deployments is correct...Our neighbor leaves this week he will first be gone from Feb-August. Home for 2 months. Then back out again until March of 2014.

 



Military Health Care Cuts

  Our men and women raised their hands and pledged an oath to this country. To honor it and defend it. For decades they have done their jobs, and now because our government can not pay its bills, they want to cut health care benefits to our active duty and retired personnel... BUT, the unionized DoD is not affected...WTF!!!!

A few years ago, when Senior was still active, and I regularly used the base clinic and pharmacy. I heard some thing similar to this from a Pharm. Tech Behind the counter. What he told me was that it was being proposed that Active Duty would have to start paying a co-pay for prescriptions. I looked at him like he was smoking crack..no way would they do that to our guys..

 Do you know the impact of something like this could have on a active duty family? let me be the first to tell you, a E1-E5 pretty much makes beans!.  I remember how hard it was for Senior and I when he was a Second Class, that was in the 90s before kids. I can only imagine now. We lived paycheck to paycheck, and that was with me working. We .did not start seeing a change until he made E6, but it got much better when he made E7.

Therefore this is going to financially hurt a lot of military families who do not deserve being slapped in the face for their sacrifice to country. He is dismantling our military to a point of where we won't have one anymore. Absolutely criminal.

Report Cards....

They went home yesterday in our school district. Our boys, did well this first semester. Lots of A's, B's and Excellants. Senior and I are very proud.

But we did find it funny, that for all the hard work the school gave rewards in the shape of free fast food coupons.For Citizenship they get a free hamburger from McDonald's. And for being a "Supreme Student" they got a free taco coupon from Taco Bell.

"Okay, stop right there" I thought ,They are giving away fast food coupons. NO WAY !
But, doesn't that go against the whole Michelle Obama and the government food initiative to stop obesity?
Didn't she preach that all this junk food causes obesity in children? She worked single handily to change government laws, and fast food and school cafeteria menus. San Francisco went as far as to outlaw toys in kids "Happy Meals". Geez..whats the fun in that? One of our kids biggest thrills is getting a McDonald's happy meal once in a while.
Unless you have school age kids, you probably didn't know it was even going on. It still amazes me how one person who is not a politician, could have so much persuasion and get so much passed. Its kind of like Michelle said "Jump" and Washington said "How High" ?
But, she hasn't stopped with just school lunches, now she is moving on to the sacred mess halls of the military..Okay I was a Navy wife for 17 + years, and I can testify that it wouldn't hurt a few folks in uniform to eat better, but C'Mon Man! Enough all ready. It isn't the Obamas business what we eat or what we do or don't feed our kids.

Well, I can say in response that I am Thankful for our local school system,they are still allowing kids to be kids, and have fun being rewarded for good grades and citizenship. It makes me feel that there are folks out there that don't mind giving Washington the proverbial finger once in a while....

Stolen Valor and The Supreme Court

Seniors Medals--Who did EARN the right to wear them!

Ahead of the decision on Obamacare the SCOTUS also ruled on a case involving "Stolen Valor" some of you may have heard about this, some you not. It was in no way a news headline, but yet it did indeed make its way through the highest court of liberals in the land.

Senior and I both are seething and dissappointed over the courts decision..  The case first started with a man named Xavier Alvarez from Los Angeles, who claimed he not only served in the Marines but was a Medal of Honor Reciepient. When in fact he had never served. For his lie he was discharged from his position with the Three Valley Water District out in L.A.  and hac to serve probabtion. So, to make long story short, this one case made it all the way to SCOTUS and they actually ruled in favor by a 6-3 vote. So now lieing about military service, and medals, is legal and protected under the 1st Amendment of our Constitution.

The court did agree that Alvarez was pathetic and and his comments contemptable but, is guarenteed under the 1st Amendments right of free speech.  I do beg to differ with the court..We do not have the right of free speech in this country..You do not have the right to enter a crowded room and shout "Fire". Radio show host can not freely drop the "F-Bomb", You can not make threats, or commit libal and defammation of others..And in many states you can now actually be fired for making statements as a private citizen about your employer..so therefore we do not have the right of free speech in this country.

This ruling is a degredation to those who did serve and earned their medals. And it devaluates the sanctity of being awarded medals for your military service. You are not just "presented" a medal, you have to go through a lot to receive one, and for a person who never served and did not do anything to earn them is a real slap in the face to those who have. And Senior and I both should know..he did 20 years in our Navy and has many medals to show for his hard work and dedication to the service.

If an active duty member  wears a medal they did not earn  they will face punishment under the  Uniform Code of Military Justice....so why should it be legal for some private citizen to be able to walk in to some sleaze bag  pawn shop or military surplus store and buy them..its just an absolute outrage.

All ready there is new legislation being presented to Congress to Amend the Stolen Valor Act. The bill would make it a crime to lie about military honors if there was an intent to gain material benefit.
But still the fact remains that somebody is allowed to lie about receiving awards they did not receive in service to their country. Falsely claiming that you bled for your country or received any award you did not earn is a disgrace.

Watch out for that household fly!....

I knew this technology was out there I mean they use drone aircraft all the time, but did not know this had indeed become reality until I saw the story on DRUDGE this morning.
Our government is working hard on developing INSECT DRONES..it does feel like the story is something out of a Hollywood movie, but no folks, it is real..just think about it, with these small almost undetectable drones, The initial thinking is a good one: to spy on terrorist, but how long will it be until they are using these little robots to spy on their own people?  Going in to YOUR house, watching YOUR family...all I can say, is keep a fly swatter handy!..

  The fear kicked off in 2007 when reports of bizarre flying objects hovering above anti-war protests sparked accusations that the U.S. government was accused of secretly developing robotic insect spies.
Official denials and suggestions from entomologists that they were actually dragonflies failed to quell speculation, and Tom Ehrhard, a retired Air Force colonel and expert on unmanned aerial craft, told the Daily Telegraph at the time that 'America can be pretty sneaky.'

The following year, the US Air Force unveiled insect-sized spies 'as tiny as bumblebees' that could not be detected and would be able to fly into buildings to 'photograph, record, and even attack insurgents and terrorists.'

Around the same time the Air Force also unveiled what it called 'lethal mini-drones' based on Leonardo da Vinci's blueprints for his Ornithopter flying machine, and claimed they would be ready for roll out by 2015.

That announcement was five years ago and, since the U.S. military is usually pretty cagey about its technological capabilities, it raises the question as to what it is keeping under wraps.

The University of Pennsylvania GRASP Lab recently showed off drones that swarm, a network of 20 nano quadrotors flying in synchronized formations

Happy Fathers Day to Dads Everywhere...

This event happend a few months back. I could not think of a more fitting Fathers day gift then seeing your special needs son walk for the first time.. Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads out there...

Dads Fathers Day Gift

While meeting Mr. Fred over the weekend, he showed us this book. It is collection of WW II stories and pictures from sailors, and soldiers that are from the piedmont area of the Carolinas. I knew upon flipping through it I knew  that it would be a good read and something my own Father who hails from Western South Carolina would love. While some of the experiences that are told are quite comical, more are realistic and will bring a tear to your eye.

So, I jumped on Amazon and ordered a copy. It arrives today in the mail. I am excited over the thrill I know he will have when he opens this gift from us on Fathers day.

My buddy Rob yesterday mentioned On my post about Merrils Marauders that someone should record and save these veterans stories for the future, well this is one book that does that..its an insightful read for anyone, especially if you have a connection to the Carolinas. 

Cody Green and the Marines

A Fellow retired  Senior Chief Friend of ours who now resides in Indiana posted this to his facebook. I loved the story, It makes me so Proud of our Active Duty Service Members, and So Proud to be an American. So  I thought I would share it with all of you:

Cody Green was a 12-year kid in Indiana who was diagnosed with leukemia at 22 months old. He loved the Marines, and his parents said he drew strength and courage from the Marine Corps. as he bravely fought the battle into remission three times. Although he was cancer-free at the time, the chemotherapy had lowered his immune system and he developed a fungus infection that attacked his brain.
Sergeant Mark Dolfini heard of Cody Green's situation through his co-worker, and got in contact with Cody's parents. When the call came that Cody was passing, he took action.

"I got the call from David about 3:00 or 4:00 that afternoon," said Sgt. Dolfini. "He made it pretty clear to me that he was terminal and he wasn't going to last too much longer. I thought this is something that needs to happen right away."
"When I was driving down there, I had no idea what I was going to say, I had no idea what I was walking into, I didn't know if Cody was conscious," said Sgt. Dolfini. "I didn't know anything. I didn't know what I was walking into whatsoever."

When Sgt. Dolfini arrived, Cody was not awake.

"He was not conscious, " said Sgt. Dolfini. "I mean, if he was, he was not responsive but he was heading to a better place."

Sergeant Dolfini made the decision to stand guard outside Cody's door for as long as Cody was alive, which turned out to be eight straight hours. When a nurse told Sgt. Dolfini Cody's time was limited, Sgt. Dolfini made the choice to say goodbye.

He presented Cody with his navigator wings and let his family be with him in his final moments.

"I actually went in and talked to Tracy and David and we just talked for a little bit," said Sgt. Dolfini. "I asked them about Cody to tell me some things about him and ironically enough, we have quite a bit in common. Except the Saints. He's a Saints fan. I'm not, so we would have argued about that. Then I let them know I was going to go ahead and go and I saluted them on my way out and gave them their time."

Sergeant Dolfini said leaving Cody and his family was not one of the hardest thing he's ever done. That moment came a week later when he attended Cody's funeral.

"I went and went in front of the casket and saluted Cody," said Sgt. Dolfini. "I turned and before I left I stopped and I turned right to Tracy, Cody's mother. We looked straight into each other's eyes and I saluted her and that was so hard. That was the most difficult thing I've encountered in awhile, but I know for that moment in time that we were locked in each other's gaze, keeping your bearing at that point is a tough thing to do."

"Marines don't do this sort of thing for acclaim," said Sgt. Dolfini. "That's not how we're wired. It's not why we join. We didn't join the Marine Corps. to be rich, we didn't join it for fame, you don't do it for that reason."

"If we all did just something like that once a day or just something small just think of what an incredible legacy that would leave for Cody," said Sgt. Dolfini.

Sergeant Dolfini said he has spoken with Cody's family several times since his funeral. He said they will be friends for life

Memorial Day...

There are no words for me to express what Memorial Day means in our house...Only Pictures of the raw emotion from loved ones.

Brothers and sisters in arms: Thank You for your ultimate sacrifice to ensure we remain free.

Late Night Training...Uh?

The Miami Herald posted a story that came from the Coconut Grove area. Residents were jolted awake around 1:45am early Tuesday morning. Because the Federal Government took over an abandoned hotel and decided to have "Urban Training".  The Army is saying that their Special Forces needed "Realistic Training".  But, my problem with it is , why are they doing it in residential neighborhoods? Is this something they have always done? and  it has just never been reported? I do know they like to do natural disaster drills, which is done on the bases of course...but not in the middle of the night, and under such secrecy.

I write this post to kind of go along with what Rob said over at his Bunker.There have been more and more stories of our military using our neighborhoods as their training grounds. Rob asked on his blog if BO wants to somehow institute martial law in order to stay in office. My answer is a definitive  yes! All this is coinciding around the whole Trayvon case, and now the raids and arrest of the White Supremacists in central Florida...it is all too ironic. Somehow, Somewhere, Something is going to explode...and BO is going to do whatever it takes to stay in office for as long as he can and use any means neccessary to achieve that goal. And they are doing it right under our own noses, and in our own neighborhoods...by the time the American people wake up and realize it, its all going to be too late.

You know when Senior and I took the boys over to West Florida, the entire drive over we kept passing these dark green mini school buses, the windows were all blacked out. No markings on them and they were all being towed on flat bed trucks.. Senior mentioned that must be the buses that will take us all to the concentration camps..there were so many of them that it was starting to get scary.

So yea in closing...what Rob said.." The Zombies are on the Move"  but in more ways then we all realize....

Kudos To The Seals.....

On this the first anniversary of the killing of UBL, POTUS is standing before us all taking most of the credit. Even his former arch rival the Clinton's have come out in support and made a commercial...
Well, its been enough to piss off the SEAL community. They were sent in to do their job and get the heck out, no special accolades needed, but now ,in this an election year, POTUS is making it political and using the SEALS as re-election ammo. After all, he has nothing else in his record to run on....So this morning  it was the headline on DRUDGE: SEALS SLAM OBAMA

 On the heels of the commercial, Former SEALS are speaking publicly about the dog and pony show being put on by this administration... And anonymously  some active SEALS are too, they know they can not speak openly about POTUS, because like we saw with the Marine Sergent, it could mean their job.

 They are pissed because they do not like being a pawn in his bid for re-election. and despite the commercial, and what ever he says during his speeches, we all know that ANY PRESIDENT would have made that same call.
 And, they are upset because SEALS live their lives in the shadows...all this publicity has compromised not only them, but their families. It has also compromised their position on the ground, and being able to perform their job.

Obama is not the hero here he is making himself out to be, The real hero's, are those that  endured all the training that goes in to being a SEAL, and who were on the ground that night carrying the guns, and giving UBL the "Double Tap" to the head....not some politician thousands of miles away sitting in a room...
