With the President and democrats in the Congress and Senate not willing to negotiate on the government shutdown issue, It was a blessing to see the stores reopen and we know all to well that the future for veterans paychecks and disability pay is uncertain at the moment. So we chose to stock up as much as we could.
It looked like business as usual as if nothing had ever been shut down, all the canned items were still in place.
Then we headed back to the meat department, and that is where you noticed the difference.
They had red meats out, and a little bit of pork products. But the chicken had all been frozen, and even though it was past its "sell by" date. The DeCA food inspectors still approved it for sale because it was frozen, they did place it on clearance. We got one look at the chicken and passed. It looked really awful.
The cheese cooler wasn't much different:
It was almost medevil, it gave me a glimpse of what the future could look like. When a natural disaster may hit, or SHTF happens.
When there are no more deliveries and all the shelves are picked clean. This was a sample of how real things will get....

ReplyDeleteWhst Senior said...they had been closed a week and told kn the 7th to reopen the 8th. We were there on the 9th. We were told it would be atleast another week to get them fully restocked.
DeleteA senior Chief buddy of mine who runs one bases galley and barracks said when the shutdown started they locked up and left everything out. When the base he works at opened theirs, he went jn there as was warning people to check dates, stuff was going bad.

ReplyDeleteLike you, I went shopping today too. I didn't make it to the commissary, I went to Crest (local grocery store) and Sam's Club. I noticed some items on the shelves in the canned area some what low however, everything else was over stocked. I really don't think many people realize the possibility of food shortages soon.
I would rather be prepared to expect anything, than not to be prepared at all. With constant weather problems here, earthquakes, floods, and fires one must be prepared.

Sandy- at any given time grocery stores only have about a three day supply in the back. So you can figure if deliveries stop. Then that is the time frame before complete chaos.
ReplyDeleteAs consumers we are dependent on the truck drivers. Tick them off and they do a strike...shoppers are screwed.

Gurlie - that's insane! and most people have no idea!!! it scares me, it used to scare me and that's when we started building our food stores. i hope it never comes down to poop hitting the fan...but with the current situation in the US...cripes...it could very well happen. i am glad that you and Senior are stocked. but if it ever gets bad enough...you know where to go.
