My Piano
The house was eerily quiet for a bit this morning. The boys at school, Senior out trimming crape myrtles at one of our commercial accounts. I did laundry, dusted, and vacuumed. Then downloaded a free scene copy of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" , so I can play it.
Scene copy just means that since it is a ballet, instead of downloading the entire thing, I chose a scene..this particular piece is the most popular and recognizable- It was in the opening ceremony for the olympics and skated to by the Russian ice dancing team.
It felt good to stretch my fingers across the ivory of the keyboard. My piano was actually purchased for my mother when I was four. As soon as I sat down on her bench, I took to it. So I was enrolled in lessons, my fate was sealed. For almost 15 years I was chained to its legs, and practiced upwards of 2 hours a day. If I stopped, you would hear my mother yell from the kitchen: " I can't hear youuuuuuuu !!!! "
My teacher was the best, but yet the hardest. Some times while playing I can still hear the tapping of her pencil as she would keep the beat with me. My music would be littered with all her red marks from the mistakes I made.
I will never forget the day I told my parents I wanted to quit. I was 18, and could not do it anymore. I did not have the heart for it. My mother, being the way that only my mother could be gave me a bill: 15 years of lessons, multiplied by $45.00 a month. A total of $8100.00 just on lessons, not included was the cost of sheet music. At the time she was dead serious. Of course I never paid it.
As I got older, I had a deeper appreciation for my musical ability, and began to miss my piano. The piano was my mothers. For years and years I asked to move it in to my home but she would never allow me to have it. If I wanted to play, I had to do it at their house, where I would be constantly reminded of the money they spent.
Finally came the day, and only after Senior and I had kids, and moved into our current home that I was allowed to have the piano. My mother was finally able to part with it, she never learned to play and all it had done was sit in their living room taking up space.
So , now it sits in my home. Several times during the week I sit down and play. I have a bag full of all my old sheet music, It is yellowing and tattered, but those red marks still there and serve as a reminder. I stare at it and wonder how I ever mastered its difficulty level. There was a time when I had it all memorized, and played in contests and concerts... Nowadays I do good to remember what all those notes are. But yet, I do not get discouraged and work my way through it..trying ever so patiently to remember and work to build up my confidence. To make it more enjoyable I sit with the boys and try to teach them... Some days though that task is easier said then done.

Gurlie - i love that scene copy! and sure do wish i was there to hear you play it! i am glad that you finally got the piano...even tho it meant years of piano lessons and no playing baseball or gravel football (yes, i remember that conversation!). i hope that for the rest of your life, when you are feeling in a certain spirit, that you will tickle the ivory keys and enjoy moments. moments spent with ourselves in awe of what we are doing are wonderful times!
ReplyDeletemuch love to you and all of yours! your friend,
kymber
Well I got it about 7 years ago...can't believe I have all ready had it in my house that long. still needs to be tuned, some keys sound horrible.
DeleteBut yea it is nice to be able to sit down and play. Just kills me the way I use to tear it up back in the day...
I take it that your mother had dreams of you using your talent as a career and was slightly put off that you didn't pursue it?
ReplyDeleteI think she had hopes and dreams of me actually playing in church.. It was when I joined jazz band, and wanted to play and write pop music that I learned that activity was heavily frowned upon..
Deleteoh parents pish posh...hit those keys with enthusiasm and play until your fingers ache!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a real piano to learn to play so I can make my own music.....enjoy!
It is not that hard to learn....I really want to learn guitar. Would love a nice acoustic one that I can strum...
DeleteMy wife and daughter play the piano beautifully. At some point, we need to haul the piano up to my daughters. I'll have to rent a van I guess. I think the piano and an old lazy boy are all the furniture we have left of what I moved from her little villa to mine when we got married.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind is it? My grandparents had a gorgeous black walnut High back Steinway. It has now sat since the late 80s in a storage shed near my uncles house. My Aunt offered it to me, but it needs major restoration work. Plus being the old school type of piano, you can guess how much it weighs. When my mom finally gave me this one, I remember Senior had a friend help him and I think we did roll it up into a Uhaul...
DeletePretty Girl, you and Senior should drop by our house some evening. I have a baby grand that sits in our living room. All its good for is holding down the carpet. Sweet Wife seldom if ever touches it and I'd love to hear it played. Its a beautiful old piano, over a hundred years old and in perfect shape. She needs attention.
ReplyDeleteI wondered if she has played it. That is a beautiful piano.. Perhaps I can grab some sheet music one day and we come and visit....
DeleteJUGM,
ReplyDeleteYou'll be able to pickup the guitar relatively easy being that you know how to play the piano. I would love to hear you play one day.
Sandy- I really want to learn, There are so many tutorials on youtube, that a person wouldn't really need any formal lessons.
DeleteI have one small problem in regards to playing for people, I get a bit of stage fright-- probably another reason why i was not accepted into Julliard.. actually I was trying pretty hard for the Berkely School in Boston, but no way would my parents allow me to go that far..
I envy you the ability... And it does take a LOT of practice... and patience to teach somebody...
ReplyDeleteMy two sit down with me and they suddenly think they have to play the theme to "jaws" ...yep lots of patience..
