A Quick Trip

Went down Tuesday, surprised my parents who had no idea I was coming. Caught grief from Mom because I made a quick trip down and did not bring the boys.
We all went to moms Dr. appointment Wednesday. Her weight is down some more.
Doctor still will not let her drive because of the medication she is on. So she decided to take herself off everything. Still did not work, Doctor said NO to driving. Mom argued and said she will never go back to see him and that indeed she will drive. Then we talked to him about her passing out, and being constantly dizzy. She has had a series of mini strokes, and Dr. explained that is why he did not want her out driving. She said my sister and I were lying, and out to make her look bad.
Doctor literally threw up his hands in disgust. He told her she was the most stubborn and hard headed patient he has ever had. And that she could basically do whatever. I think he is done with her, and just letting time takes its toll on her disease.

My dad still just sits there.. does not saying anything. I think she has worn him down as well.

After the appointment I got back on the road for the 5.5 hour drive. I know my mother is not well, because my  mother of old would have begged me to stay and go shopping or something. My mom these days, asks me to leave -there are no tears, no long goodbyes like she would years ago. All she wants to do is get back to her house, and stay in her bed with the TV remote.

The drive seemed to take forever..but I made it. I pulled up in our driveway and was greeted by all my boys. They were waiting outside for me. I missed the daylights out of them. While I know I needed to go see my parents, I also hated being away from them. I was thrilled to be home.

Tomorrow is Halloween, and now I must get started on making the home made costumes. One is being a Ghost bound by chains. The other wants to be a zombie again. I said you were a zombie last year. But, he said I have not been a zombie in SC .
I love doing our own costumes, it is always a lot of fun to be creative and see what scary things we can come up with. Since we are no longer in a neighborhood for organized Trick or Treating, we are taking the kids to an area mall.

The weather here is turning cold, Rain tomorrow night then down in to the 30s. even snow over in the mountains. BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

  1. I can sympathize with you on dealing with elderly parents. Fortunately for me, my mother lives in California and my brothers have to deal with her. I am too far away to get sucked into the melee.

Cold here and getting colder tonight. I expect it's that cold coming down from Canada and we are getting the same blast you are. So far, it has been both hotter than normal and colder than normal here, and both within a week of each other. I don't know how it's going to go this winter overall.

    Good luck with Halloween.

    1. Maybe that's why my brother lives way out in Seattle......

Yup start of the week it was near 85 and we were in shorts. End of the week it will be in the 30s, rainy and windy. Crazy stuff!

One Halloween costume just got changed up from a zombie to werewolf. Halloween should be fun..

  3. Send us all your rain, snow , cold.....we will take it gladly. With the drought here we are not picky about any weather. Sorry about the trouble with your mom. It is hard to see the person you love turn into an angry stranger.... My dad tried to cope and then died of a heart attack. Yeah....it was a dark time.

    1. It is hard, because my mom has been like this for so long, that I can't remember what she was like before. I do worry as well about my Dad and his stress with all this. He has COPD, and Cyrosis of the liver and is not well himself.
I do so hopr you all get some rain..I know how bad it must be for your area.

  4. Halloween night was our first frost....I was so busy with parent teacher conferences, costumes, and party snacks I didn't have time to harvest my tomatoes :/
Several months ago my step dad got diagnosed with alzheimers. My mom didn't quit crying for months. You would have thought he died. She started going to a support group which seems to make her more depressed. I feel sorry for my step dad. His only goal for the last 33 years was to keep my mom happy no matter what and now she says her happy has been ripped out. He's not that bad yet. I can't imagine what will happen when he does get worse. She will probably throw him into a nursing home :(
Homemade costumes are the best! I bought my little one a goddess outfit from Walmart after wearing it to school I had to sew it back together for Halloween. I guess it was only supposed to last for one day, bunch of junk at Walmart!!!!

    1. Walmart: AKA "chinamart"

my dad lives in denial about my mom. we will never accept that anything is wrong. My mom has probably been sick for well over 3-4 years. but he has never wanted to admit anything. But we kids all saw it. My mom has been sick for so long that I can not remember a time when she wasn't. I don't remember how she use to be. ...sad isn't it? We have tried talking my dad into support groups, I have even given him the hotline for the ALZ/Dementia foundation..but he won't use it. I am happy to hear your mom looked in to support groups, eventually it will help her out.
