Update on My Dad...

First off  THANK YOU all for the prayers.. I could feel the warmth from all the concern and love expressed for my family yesterday.

Dad is in the hospital for at least a couple of days. He has approx. a 1-2 gallons of fluid built up in his abdomen, which is causing extreme pain and is pressing against his heart and lungs. The X-rays showed his lungs were clear, so that is a good sign. T
His doctor is using medication to help relieve him of the fluid, and it is starting to work. But, they are also going to do a needle aspiration to draw the fluid out. Also his platelet count is VERY low...today it was 39.
He suffers from Cirrhosis of the liver, and the doctors believe it has grown worse. It was interesting because the admitting doctor lifted Dads shirt, and showed us red blotches across his stomach, and he told us that was a sign of increased Cirrhosis. Plus Dad looks incredibly jaundiced, and his skin is very dehydrated and cold.

My brother flew in from Seattle to be here, mainly for my dad. But also because he is the one person  my mother will listen to.
If there is any good news from this, it is that Dad, yesterday admitted my mother is having problems, and needs some sort of evaluation for her mental abilities. For so long, he has denied anything was wrong, but her behavior yesterday opened his eyes to the fact that indeed something is not right.

It is sad for me, to see both my parents at the same time like this  How does one deal with this? I have one parent declining medically and the other mentally. It is hard to watch the daily deterioration of my mother. She was also so well kept, and her house was immaculate.
Now, she is the complete opposite, she has removed her self from society and all she wants to do is stay in their house, talking to her you would think she is a 4-5 year old..it is as if she is regressing in age.   It is really tough and makes me very emotional.

I have my Senior and my boys there for support they are wonderful and I am truly blessed to be loved so much. . If anyone knows how I am feeling it is Senior-he has lost both his parents, and my beam of support. His strong arms give me security. I know I have all of you as well, you are all a second family--So thank you again.

  2. Sometimes it is almost as hard on the children of parents who are ill as it is on those parents themselves. I would hope when the time comes that I have to rely on decisions made by my children, that they be as loving and caring as you are. I pray God grants you the strength and wisdom to deal with whatever comes your way.

    1. It is super hard watching both my parents like this, each in their own way going down hill. Today I cried. Knowing my mom like I do and remember how she was..it hurts to see her like this.
Thank you for the prayers, it really means a lot.

  3. Gurlie - you have the support of Senior's strong arms and big shoulders...and being that he has already been through this, and i am so sorry for that, he can understand exactly what you are going through. you also have the support and love from some of your readers here who may have lost a parent and they can help you get through this. you also have the support of people who may not have lost a parent, but sympathize and feel your pain all the same.

i am so glad that your mother will be getting treatment. in your father's weakened state, she needs to be properly diagnosed and treated.

i am glad that your father is recovering and that the doctor's seem to know what they are doing.

i am here if you need me so just yell, k? you are all in our thoughts and prayers. sending much love your way. your friend,
    kymber

    1. Thank you so much. I know I am not the only person to ever go through this, and there is lots of support in the blogisphere..
We are not sure yet if mom will get treatment, in her state of mind she is very combative. So it will be hard convincing her to go see someone. My dad has denied any problems with her, but yesterday opened his eyes, that she does indeed need help. And that is a first step..

Dads platelet count is horribly low, and right now they are trying to raise it. so they aspirate the fluid from his stomach. Then we are hopeing they will do a complete body scan, and find out what is really going on..my brother seems to think it is renal failure.

  6. JuGM - Looks like as usual a good v. bad situation and lots of worry to come. I will send good wishes and payers.

However to add a bit of levity to the situation I am a bit confused. Not long ago you declared you were having your 29th birthday and yet your said your Fathers age was 80? I am assuming your Mother is much younger than your Father then?

I am sure your Father will pull through fine and quickly. Anyone who can Father a child at 50 (I am not even 50 yet and I wouldn't do it again) has to be a tough and energetic fellow :)

  7. Omg Preppy! I needed the laugh...I have been 29 for a while now....kymber and Senior knows my real age..lol. Dad is 80 and mother 75.
But I do know plenty of men who had kids over 50. Especially in bible times....

Thank you for the prayers and giving me a smile

    1. i DO know her real age and am appalled that she has been lying to people for so long. she's 30 people! she turned 30 this year!!! i can't believe she still keeps telling people she's 29. and making poor PP confused all this time. people - she's 30!!!

(and i know i just broke the cardinal friend rule by telling her actual age. she's 30!!!!)

love you Gurlie. don't hate me for telling your real age ok? bahahahahah!

  9. JUGM,

I laughed when I read PP's post about your age.

Please know I have your dad, mom, you, and your family in my prayers.
Does your mom have something at home that comforts her? Something like a book, stuff animal, necklace? If she does, this may reassure her, and help her calm down.
She's upset because things are different, and she always relied on your dad. Oh sweetie I do feel for you, it's hard.

I hope the meds and needle aspiration are helping and making your dad a little more comfortable. Lean on Senior for your soft place to fall in these very stressful times. And know you do have friends here in the good old blogger world.

Sending hugs and love to your and yours.
    Sandy

  11. SANDY: Yes she likes to crochet, and I think that is her outlet. We saw Dad tonight, and he looks a bit better. But the aspiration should really relieve the fluid faster then the meds. Thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers

    NFO: Thank you my friend....

MAMA: Can't believe PP does not that we are both in our 30s....lol Thank you my good friend for the prayers, I can feel them all the way over here.

DFW: Thank You So much...it has really helped.
