First Fishing Trip

It took a few years to happen, but yesterday was the boys first official fishing trip. I guess it had to do with the age thing, and wanting them to be able to handle their own little poles and not get bored.

One of the things I like about the Carolina Estate is my Uncle lives about 50 miles away. He has a small stocked pond on his property, and the bass are plentiful. So yesterday we spent the afternoon with him, grilled out, and then got in some fishing.

NW got his first little bass, but it was so small we threw it back...did not matter the kid was delighted. Then Senior started getting some bites and landed his first of the day..

little ND and I were fishless, he got tired of using his kid sized pole, and began learning how to use a bigger pole. At the time he was practicing throwing it out and reeling it back in..  I was about 30 feet away, Senior and NW were clear on the other side of the pond, and my Uncle was sitting near ND. Every thing was silent, then all heck broke loose. As ND was reeling in the big fishing rod a  real monster took the  little bit of bait still on the hook.  He landed this big guy, his very first fish:

We tried getting him to hold it, but no way was he sticking his hands in the mouth..lol   My Uncle said it was the biggest one he has seen in a while out of the pond. ND is still so proud and has not stopped talking about his fish. After the excitement wore down, Senior caught one more. Then the fish seemed to stop biting.

We headed to the garden where my Uncle taught NW how to cut okra, then sent us back with a mess of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and okra

  1. That's a great adventure for the kids. I always enjoyed cane pole fishing off the bank when I was a youngster. You have a really nice place up there and it's good to have a relative so close.

  3. Ah fishing is a relaxing sport here in MN. My boys try every now and then but hit and miss. The boys will have a story to tell back in school. Sounds like your summer is going great.

  4. JUGM,

Did you clean up those great looking fish and have fish over the weekend?
Will you be canning all the vegetables your uncle gave you?

    1. Thanks Sandy.. Yep they had a good time. Senior cleaned them up, and now they are fillet and in the freezer. That big one had some nice meat on it.

I am making refrigerator pickles out of all the cukes. Cooking up the green beans tonight to go with supper, not sure what to do with the 10 million pounds of tomatoes we got, going to bread the okra and fry that for Senior and NW.

  6. Reminds me of the first fish my eldest daughter caught... a crappy (sounds like crop-ee) in a stocked pond with a huge cane pole. She was like five. LOL! It was bigger than her head! She brought it in and her dad helped her hold it up. She kissed the thing (cause her dad told her to) and then threw it back in after her dad got the hook out of its mouth. It was huge and we had no camera... which sucked! lol!

  7. We all enjoy fishing. Congrats to your son! He will always remember this day. :) We've all been talking about having a stocked pond on a family estate. Your uncle has it going on. :)
