Memorial Day

An acquaintance asked where are the festivities this year for Memorial Day. I was happy when another person told them there is no " celebrations" , but there are memorial services and wreath layings.

It's not about picnics, partying or celebrating the official start of summer.
It's a day to remember complete strangers   that gave their life defending this great country, so that we may enjoy the freedoms when have today.

the phone call....

The boys summer vacation starts at precisely 10:30am. The past two days have been these early release days...why is that? Why not make Thursday one full day and let it be over with then?

The school system really makes me shutter with its decision making process. I called about the Memorial Day and Veterans Day issue. And as I expected I received a complete dance around the initial question. It was blamed on everything from the August start date, to final exams being this week and not wanting to give kids a three day weekend so they could have that day to prepare. By the time the man was done with the excuses, the phone had started to sprout roots from my ear.

* SIGH*

 I was told by the school board office that several state house reps.wants to change the school start date to an earlier day in August, thus allowing school districts to allow kids those two days off. I was asked to email the state Representatives. So I contacted all SC State House Members...most gave me an automated email But, one did send me a more in depth response..what I was asked to do? I was asked in the email  to contact my local school board members about the issue, that they are the ones who vote on the school calendar.
So basically back to square one.

*SIGH*

So, Senior and I will continue to keep the boys home on those days, teach them about the sacrifices made to keep our country free. And teach them patriotism and respect for our military ourselves.

our memorial day....

For Memorial Day...we let the kids play hookie. Yes our commie school district does not recognize the sacrifice that was made to keep our country free. School was in session today as well as Veterans Day. Really irks me because MLK and other insignificant days are given off. ,

So, we kept the boys home today and went to the cemetery to put flags on those that once served this country. Buried here is my Father in Law who served in Korea, and his brother..a highly decorated Marine that did three tours in Vietnam, when asked to go back for a fourth tour, he was denied.

Just our small way of teaching our children what this day means and honoring those who sacrificed so much.

Americans Forget Memorial Day

The ignorance of people just amazes me. "Memorial day is just a bogus holiday" ?
" I have been out of school for 15 years, and forgot the meaning" ? 

I have no words for these folks, and the slap in the face they just gave to those who fought and died for freedom. Why don't they go to a national cemetary and just spit on the graves while they are at it.

Simply unbelievable....

What a Class Act

Whether you loved him or hated him. Whether you voted for him or not.. you all must admit, he was better then what we got now- He and Laura brought class to the White House and to the Office of President. He knew how to Salute, and would have never asked a Marine or any one else to hold anything of his, and he most certainly would know how to properly prounounce the individual military ranks.

So this comes as real no surprise to me that when he hosted the Memorial day run for Wounded Warriors Project on his ranch out in Crawford, TX  he took the time out to pose for pictures with our wounded troops. And here is one..not holding his umbrella, but our Flag...

I ask this of my readers, on this Memorial Day To Whom Do You Honor?

Memorializing our nations hero's began during the Civil War when Southern ladies, put flowers and items of remembrance on both Confederate and Union Soldiers graves.
It was in 1868 that Commander in Chief, John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic issued General Order 11. He declared it to be for the purpose of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers who died defending their country during the Civil War.  That first Memorial Day Ceremony or "Decoration Day" as it was known then.Took place at Arlington National Ceremony with the placing of the wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier. Graves throughout the cemetery were also decorated with small American Flags.
But some argue that the first memorial day actually took place with those good southern ladies a few years prior.

For many Americans the day involves parades and cookouts, It has also become known as the unofficial start of summer. The Indianapolis 500 has been traditionally ran on this weekend since 1911, and NASCAR jumped on board in 1961 with the running of the Coca-Cola 600 the same day.

But Again, I ask the question: "Whom do you honor on Memorial Day"?  For me its people like my Great Great Uncle who died in Germany during WW1. I also think of ancestors who perished during the Civil War, and all those who died in wars since. I think of Seal Team 6 on Memorial Day, who's helo went down and all on board perished. And I think of Hero's like "The Sullivan Brothers" who in WW11 were stationed together on board the USS JUNEAU..they died together when it was struck by a torpedo.  I think of all those Military members who perished in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and battles across the Pacific and Europe.
All these Americans were hero's. If not for them and thousands others...we wouldn't have the freedoms we do know. We owe them our lives. We owe them our respect and gratitude.
They Sacrificed so much so we could stay free...

There are no words for me to express what Memorial Day means in our house...Only Pictures of the raw emotion from loved ones.
