If you have been over to SENIOR'S blog, then you know he got a new toy: a new tractor. Yup! I guess you could say that we are official country people now. It was really a much needed addition to the estate, because there has been a lot of cleaning up to do around here.
Like the picture above, The boys awoke Saturday morning, and headed out the door to "Help" us. So, they grabbed some rakes, and I directed them to lets rake up leaves around all the trees...so we did... It took us the better part of the day to get all of it done.
While working we found an old machete, or knife that grew in to this trunk:
And a really cool knot that formed at the base of this tree, now affectionately known as the "wishing well tree" :
I think this is some of the Golden Rod that Ole Pioneer Preppy has talked about so much..looks really pretty:
The boys, while catching crickets, came across this little Box Turtle...they scared the crap out of him, and he refused to come of his shell until we all left. And let me tell you the person who said turtles move slow is full of it. He got the heck out of dodge! ha ha
Our Good neighbor Mr. Farmer stopped by to help with some of the clean up, he mentioned that five of the baby chicks, that have been in the brooder were ready for the big coop. So, we made the move. They freaked, and the older girls were picking on them, but now they have all settled. He did sex some of them for me, and it looks like we have three or four roosters in the mix. One, is pictured here, he is the white one behind the little brown one, you can see his crown starting to stick up, the boys named him "Billy Bob" :
Now it is Monday, the boys hated going back to school and massive amounts of rain are headed this way. The neighbor behind us has opened up his back pasture for his horses, they like this dreary weather:

Yup we have fields and fields of it here as well....looks very festive for fall. Been doing tons of work around here...the tractor was a blessing.

DeleteYour boys are going to learn so much and have a great time growing up on the farm. And the tractor was the first best equipment investment.... a quad with a trailer would be a good second investment (wait until next year!) I'm excited for you all with your new adventure!

DeleteWe have an ATV and trailer for it. We use it all the time. The next big thing, would be to sell the ATV, pay it off then get a side by side, one that all four of us can ride.in it.

ReplyDeleteCongrats on the purchase of your tractor, this will help with many projects around the Estate.
Goldenrod makes for a great tea, tastes a bit like anise. Goldenrod helps with wounds, arthritis, and skin problems. It's also great for colds, flu, and sore throats. A lot of people have allergic reactions to it.
It's always fun to work or clean on the property, and find unique things like the knife in the tree trunk or the cool knot. I bet before you know it your critter cam will capture deer and a few other critters looking for food.

ReplyDeleteThe roosters are great for killing snakes. I only have to worry about copperheads and rattlers here, but are there water moccasins there? They are the worst! Chickens will kill snakes, and roosters are particularly apt to do so.
I feel silly, I thought you and your family had moved to Charlotte, NC. lol Wishing you many happy years in your new home!

You will eventually learn to butcher the extra roosters. They do a lot of damage to the hens if there is too many.

My little Yorkie who thinks she's a pit bull found a turtle the other day. I wish I videoed it. Funniest stuff ever! She followed that little guy into the woods, lol!
