a choice and a conversation....

Some girls fret over what clothes and shoes to buy, the choices are endless, and the decision is always a hard one. Not I of course, my current dilemma is over a new handgun. This really started over a week ago when Senior got a text from a friend asking if I wanted to sell my Glock...  'What" !!  No I am not selling my Glock. Then I wouldn't be "The Glock Mom"  I love that gun.

My current issue is between a Ruger SR .22 or a 1911 .22  I like them both and have handled them both. I watched a youtube on the Ruger , and liked it, very lightweight and fits well in my hand.  But, it came in black,  pink or purple.  And I really want mine in Zombie Green. But then there is the 1911... I always wanted one.
This search took me from the local gun shop to a big box sporting goods store. Senior was shopping from the 5.56 that is soon to be executive ordered out of stock. And I was peeking in to the counter. Again no Zombie green Ruger SR.22  and no 1911 in .22 either...

Next to me was a small and fragile elderly woman and her overbearing son, who was trying like a politician to talk his little ole mother in to some big honking  knock off brand .45  in stainless steel that the woman could barely hold up. I hate seeing this.
 I injected myself in to the conversation, after chatting with her a bit I found out she had never handled a gun before, and had never shot one. So, I suggested something easier for the mother to handle and to shoot. Such as the Glock 26 or a Ruger..   Oh no! This made the son unhappy. He did not like Glocks or Rugers and wanted his mother to get something cheaper, it is only for home defense he said and will stay in her nightstand., his mother he said needed something with stopping power and a gun is better then any insurance policy. The guy behind the counter looked at me rolled his eyes, and shook his head at the son...lol
My argument back was that she needed something she could handle and was easy for her to use. I even suggested a revolver so that she did not have to worry about a slide.   I myself went through at least 4 handguns until I found my perfect fit. But what did I know? I was just a woman.
The best thing for this mom to do would have been to tell her son where to go, and carry herself to an indoor range where she can try out different guns. And I kick myself for not suggesting that..

I wished her luck and Senior and I walked off. After some more time browsing we walked back past the gun counter and the pair was still there..

And I am still here with my little dilemna  of what to get the 1911 or a Ruger SR. For me to get the SR in green obviously means I need to get the black one and duracoat the parts I want green...  *SIGH*

yay for South Carolina

First it was "water safety" courses which I thought was exceptional for our school system to do that. Now This proposed legislation. I am waiting to hear the anti-gun advocates stance on this:

Legislation proposed last month by three members of the South Carolina legislature would require public school teachers in that state to spend three weeks each year extolling the virtues of the Second Amendment — as that amendment is understood by the National Rifle Association. The bill requires all South Carolina public schools to “provide instruction in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution for at least three consecutive weeks during one grading period in each academic year.” Moreover, “the State Superintendent of Education shall adopt a curriculum developed or recommended by the National Rifle Association or its successor organization.”

Three weeks is an absolutely extraordinary amount of instruction time to devote to such a narrow subject, at least at the elementary or secondary school level, even setting aside the political nature of the material. Many high school history teachers publish their course syllabi online, and a ThinkProgress review of Advanced Placement United States History syllabi reveals that teachers typically spend far less than three weeks teaching pivotal events or major aspects of American history.

One South Carolina charter school, for example, devotes just two weeks to “The Slave System and the Coming of the Civil War” and only a week and a half to World War II in its Advanced Placement United States History course. A Maine private school devotes two weeks to “Slavery and Sectionalism” and another two weeks to “World War II and the Origins of the Cold War.” A Kentucky high school devotes only two weeks to the “Roaring 20’s, Great Depression and New Deal,” a period that thrust America into an historic crisis and transformed the nation’s view of the role of government in society.

Nevertheless, the South Carolina bill does not simply require schools to spend more time teaching students the NRA’s view of gun rights than many advanced high school courses spend teaching about subjects such as slavery or World War II; it requires this course to be taught at the elementary, middle and high school level.

something cool...part 2

Upon cleaning out more shoe boxes that my Father-in-Law used to store all his paper items. I came across several of these old journals that Harrington and Richardson used to print. This one is dated from the early 80s. They were sold for the bargain price of $1.50.

I particularly liked this article on the H & R Revolver, when first produced it sold
for a price of $5.50-$8.00.

I personally had not heard of this brand, so upon further investigation I found their website: H&R 1871 and they are indeed still in business. In 2000 they were aquired by Marlin Firearms.
I asked Senior, and while he knew the brand, he did not know of the jounals.



Anyways, something kind of cool and useful that I can flip through and learn something new, from something old. It will help once Senior is done constructing our range. 



 In other news, the weather here has been nothing short of gorgeous. This coming week will be a bit stressful, I am headed to Florida and showing up at one of my mothers doctors appointment... oh boy!

Gun Control

A Retired Master Chief friend of ours posted this on his facebook. I just had to share it: 

 It has already started at Cabala’s Sporting Goods Store. There was a bit of confusion at their store this weekend. When I was ready to pay for my purchase of some ammo, the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me."
Making a mental note to complain to the NRA about these gun control whackos running amok, I did just as she had instructed.
When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to how I should place my credit card in the card-reader.
I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They need to make their instructions to us seniors a little clearer!

Over Reactions.....

 

 

As soon as I pulled into the school car line I noticed the news van antenna. "In the name of all things holy", I thought.  "what has happened"  !
I got no emergency phone calls... couldn't be that bad.

I ask around and no one seems to know. The ladies are all oblivious... 

Then I got home, and check the new stations web site and there is the story and it will be on the local news tonight:

Last Thursday, a 1st grader brought bullets. The teacher, instead of confiscating them and making it all an issue. Asked the child to put them back in his backpack and take them home.

On Friday, parents learned of the incident...then the over reaction started. All chaos has ensued and parents want the teacher fired, and their kids moved out of her class. School ends in one month... just put the teacher on administrative leave or something until then...

They suspended a 5 year old for making a gun out of Lego's , this was in Hyannis West elementary in Boston area. In Maryland a 6 year old WAS suspended for a "finger gun" and saying bang. An 8th grade student was expelled for wearing an NRA t-shirt. And please let us all not forget the poptart incident.
 This kid actually brought a bullet, he should be expelled for life! I mean come on now!

My point is, yes it was wrong for the student of that age to have a bullet, and it was wrong for the teacher not to confiscate it AND notify parents. Lets leave it at that. Lets stop this irrational fear of guns, that's all over reaction  like this is meant to do.

People have been saying for months, Guns don't shoot themselves! and for Gods sake bullets don't shoot without guns. If you hit a bullet square with a hammer, it'll explode and yeah it is potentially dangerous. But its not being launched through a barrel at 1000s of feet a second. People actually pulling their child out of school because some kid brought a bullet, these people are afraid of their own shadow and an embarrassment.. 

I have since learned that it did not happen to ND or NWs teachers. I love those ladies and would not want them to suffer through this..

Is this idiocy in this country with our elected officials ever going to stop? Anger management courses for people buying ammo?  Again some idiotard politician trying to pass a bill that would hurt the law abiding gun owner. It will do nothing for the criminal.

Who is going to give courses to Homeland Security and other Government agencies for their bulk ammo purchases?
This is one reason why it is hard to find ammo, our government is buying it all up. Over the next 4-5 years DHS is projected to purchase more then 1.6 billion rounds. This is the equivalence of 5 bullets for every person in our country. They say its for training purposes and for agents on duty.
Call me a conspiracy theorists or not, but I believe something more sinister is at play...

A facebook friend who is like minded, turned me on to this guy, His name is Colion Noir. And I liked his page, and have viewed his You Tube Channel several times.

He is no holds barred when it comes to our Second Amendment rights.And has been very outspoken on Anti-gun control. He is very knowledgable in firearms and also has some useful training videos.

What is Missing....

After I recovered from my bad dream, Senior asked if we wanted to go downtown to browse the Gun Show. He had at a previous show purchased a tactical flashlight and it had since started to malfunction so he wanted to take it back to the vendor. The folks there are good like that and are ready and willing to back up their product. We found the Flashlight guy and as expected he fixed the problem with no questions. 

For being the early afternoon on a Sunday the line was beginning to swell. But was moving steadily.

But more noticeably was what was NOT inside the Gun Show:

We took the boys again. And Yes I was like a Mother Hawk..wouldn't let either of them out of my sight. Held tight to little hands.

While browsing the aisles Senior and I discussed the panic that people are going through. Fortunately we are some of those that saw the handwriting on the wall and prepared for all of this. I feel for those who didn't. Well, actually maybe I DON'T feel for them. They knew this was coming for the past FOUR years. I liken it to a Hurricane:  You watch the weather, you know its coming. But, you do nothing because you think it can't happen to you. Then SMACK you are hit with a Cat. 5 and wonder what just happened.....

Safety Tips From Mayor Bloomberg

The Blackout Project # 1

Today was another gun show. Senior and I meet up with Stephen and his SW, Rebel and Pirate Jim. Hanging out with Sweet Wife is always fun, she is a good friend and all around beautiful person. We held out our hands to our husbands for money, they obliged us with a smile. The men went to the right, and us ladies went to the left. It was time we had some "gurlie time" at the gun show.

 I like this one actually more then the one a couple of weeks ago. One thing I have noticed is husband and wife booths, on one end is the husband selling firearm accessories, and the other end is the wife selling home made items..today we found a nice Italian lady who made Beeswax candles, her husband was next to her selling Ammo cans.

Senior was on a mission, he is building a "300 AAC Blackout" he is tired of the traditional 5.56 and .308 calibers. So, now he is building a .308 caliber in a lightweight short AR style platform that provides hard hitting .30 caliber. 

Today he built the lower, all he needs now is the upper and it will be done.

Gun Show Field Trip

This morning, Senior and I chose to go check out the gun show that was in town. We have been before, but not together since December. We dropped the kids off early with my parents..Senior decided to stay in the truck today..

We got down to the venue and met up with a few other friends; DUKE, PIRATE JIM and REBEL. One thing I have noticed in recent years is how long the line to get in has grown and, how fast the hall fills up. It opened at 9am, and by 11am, it was a shoulder to shoulder traffic jam . We also noticed today how much things have gone up...some of the prices on guns, and ammo was ridiculous, but none more crazy then a guy selling range bags..

Senior and I did not purchase any firearms today, but did get some odds and ends. I am putting together a little medical kit for my BOB, and found some Israel first aid items, got some kid sized para cord bracelets for our boys, and I purchased a very nice Roma concealed carry purse, its a messenger bag style which is what I was looking for. Senior picked up a ammo can full of 40 cal ammo... turned out to be about $.26 a round.

 But the best deal I got was on the "Enemies Foreign and Domestic" series by Matthew Bracken. I got all three books for 12.00 each..they go for 20.00 on amazon. Three years ago I borrowed the series from Stephen, and have since wanted my own copies...they are that good- and a MUST READ !!!  The sellers know Mr. Bracken and have been trying to get him to do a book signing at a future gun show, I hope he will accept and participate, I would like to one day meet him.

After walking around for a couple of hours, getting separated a few times, and debating over the purchase of a Henry Repeating Firearm..which we decided not to purchase, we left and Senior treated me out to lunch  : )

Super Soaker / Zip Gun

The ingenuity of the American people never ceases to amaze me, and what lengths criminals will go to in order to conceal things.  I saw this story on the news last night.  A  Fresno, California fellow, took apart a Super Soaker water gun, and made it in to what authorities are calling a "Zip Gun" it is something that only one round can be fired through, in this case a 20gauge shot gun shell.

The scary part is folks are doing it more frequently because its cheap, only cost about 30.00 for the transition, and you do not need to be a firearms expert to make these.
 The only thing is that the people making the guns do not expect is how the casing can withstand the blast. Not only could they kill someone innocent, but also themselves in the process.

However, my thought behind stories like these is that it is  just more ammunition for the Anti-Gun folks to use against us law abiding gun owners. Soon liberals will try to take your  childs favorite water guns, and nerf guns  off the market...
This particular fellow really wasn't too smart in that he was all ready a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, now add all the new charges,and needless to say he will be away for a long time.

So be careful this summer because that innocent little child's water gun, may just hold a bigger blast then just water....  

UPDATE: Iron Maiden Project Pt. 2

We finally got all the parts in for the build. First item received was the ATI 6 position collapsible folding composite stock, with cheek piece. Second was the Pro-Mag extended height piccatiny rail, center portion of the rail is hollowed out to allow for use of the iron sights. Third item is a 4x32 scope, and finally we got a OD green neoprene sling.

Barrel and receiver assembly was removed from a Ruger 10/22 walnut stock, simple tools were used for the build, a Phillips and flat head screwdriver and 2 Allen wrenches.

The build took less time then it did for us to can 6 quarts of corn.

Why Does Homeland Security need 450 Million Rounds?

I read an interesting article this morning on Homeland Security making a huge ammo purchase. To the tune of some 450 Million rounds of hollow point bullets and they have an open bid for 175 million rounds of .223.  

Call me crazy, but doesnt that seem a bit excessive?. Why would Homeland Security need all that ammo, when we have a military to defend us?. My answer would begin in 2008 on the campaign trail when Obama announced he would like to a have a civilan police force. You see signs of this every day with his overall disregard for our active duty military.

The following is a press release from ATK ( the contractor) and Homeland Security :

"ATK announced that it is being awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (DHS, ICE) for .40 caliber ammunition. This contract features a base of 12 months, includes four option years, and will have a maximum volume of 450 million rounds.
ATK was the incumbent and won the contract with its HST bullet, which has proven itself in the field. The special hollow point effectively passes through a variety of barriers and holds its jacket in the toughest conditions. HST is engineered for 100-percent weight retention, limits collateral damage, and avoids over-penetration.
“We are proud to extend our track record as the prime supplier of .40 caliber duty ammunition for DHS, ICE,” said Ron Johnson, President of ATK’s Security and Sporting group"


 Ruger Firearms recent promotion  From January 1- Feb. 29th was so successful that they had to suspend new gun sales until May 2012, because they had orders totaling more then 1 million guns that were sold during that promtional time.
Since Obama has taken office, it is not a secret that gun sales in this country have increased.The FBI has reported there are now more then 1.4 million active gang members in our country a figure which as increased 40% since 2009. With our sagging economy, violent home invasions are also on the rise.

Clearly Americans are feeling more and more they need to arm themselves, and with the DHS making such large ammo purchases, Private citizens may find it hard to purchase ammo. Which again takes me back to my intial question of why DHS needs it, and whom do they plan using it on?

Spam Can Ammo and other things....

 Last night we went shopping for A Mosin Nagant, Senior has been wanting a good reliable Russian rifle. So again we were back at one of our local stores, and found they had a couple for a pretty good deal, for some reason he decided to wait, and opted to buy the crimson trace laser grips for his Glock...  Ok, so now I am jealous.  I got a new set of "Hot Pink" ear protection, now I am shopping around for pink or purple shooting glasses. Afterall, a girl needs to look stylish while killing zombies!

Then I came across a this:  "Spam Cam Ammo" I thought it cool, and worthy of mention on my blog, I guess I am just out of the loop of things, as I have never seen ammo this way...



My new IPOD came today, its really small...I almost feel like I have been ripped off..But I like it because it has the fitness tracker on it, so now It will measure how far and how many calories I burn while walking/exercising.
I got Senior a XBOX kinect game he has been wanting.. BLACKWATER...totally cool, looks hard though. Seems to be  a sort of "training game" as you are virtually shooting and dodging bad guys...hmmm maybe its something to do when we aren't at the range....

Got some new folks that stopped by my clothesline and hit the follow button..  A big WELCOME TO : OrangeJeepDad ( its always nice to welcome a fellow jeep person) , WILDCHILDT, and HOBO.

On another note..  Everyone is talking about training lately,Next Tuesday I turn another year older and have  requested to spend the morning in the range, Its how I wish to celebrate, spending some ammo and doing my own training. I just want to add to what Duke @ Down Range Report said in regards to using .22s for training. Its something that Senior and I do as well, we have a .22 pistol and rifles. The ammo is much cheaper then expending all of our expensive brass, financially it makes better sense. Save and stock pile your high calibers for when SHTF, because that will be when you really need it. Like Duke, Senior also has the conversion for his AR15, and I have the ARCHANGEL Conversion on my Ruger 10/22.

Tomorrow is finally my sisters 50th Birthday Party ( Hallelujah and the angels all sing) I am thankful its almost here and will soon be over. In honor I will be dressed head to toe in black. My geeky brother n law requested I buy name tags for all of us to wear. I "accidentally" forgot them. I feel that I am not going to a high school reunion, or some sort of conference, no way am I wearing some nerdy name tag......

Pink Ammo! ....Who'da Thought!

As I have been dealing with nasty strep throat and sinus headaches all week, I finally started feeling better last evening and ventured out to shop for my Dads birthday which is tomorrow. This is a first in a string of Birthdays over the  next week, including mine.

So Senior and I took the boys to a outdoors store, what do you get a 78 yr old man that has everything? I know, a digital thermometer! sounds good to me, If he doesn't like it I will throw in the receipt and he can return it. Senior as always ventured over to the gun section, while I did my browsing. He eavesdropped on a couple of "thugs" who were gun shopping. Do you know the type I mean? Dreadlocks, baggy pants,etc.... I won't go any further with descriptions because far be it from me to be racist or a bigot. Well these superheros who want to play "grownup" and carry a gun had the poor sales man in a tizzy, as they had not the slightest idea on how to pull back a slide. And here they were wanting to buy one. For what purpose I can only imagine. Senior walked over to me with a smirk and shaking his head...

I came across something cool in my browsing, Federal Ammo now has colored shotgun shells, Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness and Red, White , and Blue for those who feel patriotic....So they get a KUDOS from me. Knowing the Pink and Purple kind of girl I am, my eyes got big over the Pink ammo...WOW!!!!  ammo makers are really hitting the mainstream and appealing to the ladies. I batted my eyes a few times at senior, but he wouldn't budge...I thought how much fun I could have shooting these from the mossberg tactical 12gauge. I wish they came in 410 so I could shoot them from my Judge. Oh well, my birthday is next week, maybe I will get a box. Getting ammo is better then getting chocolote right?

Scientists patent self-guided bullet

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Engineers at Sandia National Laboratories have invented a bullet that guides itself to the target.

Sandia has wide expertise at miniature technology, and the bullet works like a tiny guided missile.

The patented design doesn't shoot straight. Instead of a spiral rotation, the bullet twists and turns to guide itself towards a laser directed point. It can make up to thirty corrections per second while in the air. 

 Jim Jones, distinguished member of technical staff, and his team of engineers at Sandia Labs think the .50-caliber bullets would work well with military machine guns so soldiers could hit their mark faster and with precision.

"We've tested gunpowders to see if we can get muzzle velocity for military interest," Jones said. "We've tested various electronic components to see if they would survive the launch."

The team needs a sponsor to take the prototype and manufacture it on a commercial scale. Research and development grants have taken the project this far.

Jones says it's about halfway through being fully developed for commercial use.
