This is why you need to always carry a compass, a map, and a well stocked backpack full of survival gear, especially after reading that food sources were scarce. And why you should have a decent survival weapon, because what if you ran in to some bad guys on the run, or for God sakes...Bigfoot in that Oregon Forest.

They got lucky, they did not get stuck in heavy snow or did they?? I don't remember.
